2021 Fourth Quarter Winner With the holidays upon us, stocking up on supplies for holiday visitors is time consuming, hectic and fighting with all of the others doing the exact same thing makes it a less than pleasurable endeavor. This weekend I decided to beat the rush and visit the store to stock up on some groceries. As I browsed down the aisles I decided that stocking up on canned goods prior to winter setting in would certainly be to my benefit, so down the canned food aisles I went. As with many others, out of both the need to not over indulge and for some it is just a matter of financial capabilities I opted to purchase some of the smaller cans over the larger ones. I was however surprised to find that the cans containing less than half of the product cost substantially more than the cans with almost more. Immediately I knew I had discovered my very first official AssHat winner. This was not the case months back because I had actually purchased the same product because it was almost half the cost of the larger product. This makes me fairly certain that this type of practice is basically a bait and switch tactic to increase profits from unsuspecting customers. My thoughts quickly panned to some poor elderly person who is trying to make ends meet, picking up the smaller of the cans to try and save some money. For many of them living alone on a budget would find it wasteful to purchase more than they could really eat, and many of them grew up in much harder times. For many, checking the fine print on the shelf labels is probably just an over taxing situation not worth the effort. Since nothing really has actual prices on them anymore and items are normally not directly under where they belong it is probably mute point anyway. This is why I am awarding the very first ever AssHat award to the merchants who practice this type of deception. Figuring that someone in a rush or someone who cannot easily determine the actual cost per volume, will simply pick up the smaller can thinking that they are saving money.. all the while they are being taken advantage of. After all.. if you cannot screw over the elder generation who actually built the country supplying your profits, who can you screw over. Tip of my AssHat to you.
